Happy Birthday April Babies!
Lucky the girl born in the month of April because her modern and traditional birthstone is the precious Diamond! This gemstone made of crystallized carbon that has been formed by intense heat and pressure deep within the earth's mantle is known as the hardest substance on earth. Diamonds have been around through history. The ancient Hindus had 14 names for it. One is Vajra, which translates to lightening and another is Agira which means fire. The Greeks called it Adamus, meaning invincible.
In historical times, the Diamond's healing properties were said to help with healing diseases of the brain and pituitary glands. It was also used as a remedy for poison to draw out toxins.
In its natural state, a diamond resembles a plain pebble, though a sparkly one at that. Up until the 16th century, when gemstone cutting and polishing techniques were perfected, it was considered taboo to alter the diamond in any way. Times have changed since then as much of the value in a diamond today is based on the way it is cut, enhancing it to bring out the perfect facets that refract light into flashes of color.
Simulated diamonds have been developed over the years as less expensive alternatives. One of these substitutes is Cubic Zirconia. This manmade gem does have excellent fire, or dispersion of light, but it has more dispersion than a diamond so it sparkles more. Not a bad thing to those of us who like our bling :)Many people think of
diamonds as being colorless. They actually come in a rainbow of colors including black.
